Romano reveals 'no buy option' update after Man Utd confirm loan transfer
Manchester United have confirmed the temporary departure of midfielder Toby Collyer for the 2025-26 season.
The 21-year-old will join Championship side West Bromwich Albion on loan.
Reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that Collyer is a “big part of the future United project” and the Baggies do not have an option to buy him permanently.
Collyer joined United’s academy from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022.
Since making his senior debut under Erik ten Hag, he has clocked 13 first-team appearances and impressed with his work rate and discipline.
Ruben Amorim rates Collyer highly but the youngster faces stiff competition at United.
Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte are all battling for a single defensive midfield role.
Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system means Bruno Fernandes is guaranteed the other midfield berth.
Collyer is a hard-working midfielder. He is not as creative as Mainoo but brings more solidity at the centre of the park.
There is no doubt that he can develop into a perfect number six for the Red Devils.
However, he needs to play regularly to hone his skills and develop game awareness.
A season at West Brom looks like a win-win deal for the player, United, and the Championship outfit.
Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday also pushed for his signature, but West Brom won the race.
He joins fellow United starlets Dan Gore, Ethan Wheatley and Jack Moorhouse, all of whom have already secured loan moves this summer.
Credit should also be bestowed upon Jonny Evans whose stellar work as Head of Loans and Pathways continues to ensure United’s young talents get the right opportunities.
