CWCL 2025: Ntopwa FC and Olympic De Moroni Profiles

The CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifiers will be played in Johannesburg, South Africa from August 22-31.

There are a record 10 teams competing this year, up from the previous best year of eight, as more and more sides meet the stringent licensing regulations of CAF to take part.

Here are the profiles of two of the teams to take part, Ntopwa FC of Malawi and Olympic de Moroni from Comoros.

NTOPWA FC TO MAKE SECOND APPEARANCE AT REGIONAL FINALS
Malawi outfit Ntopwa FC will be making their second appearance at the CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifiers, having had a tough debut in 2023.

Ntopwa were crowned 2022 FAM National Women’s Championship winners after defeating the Lilongwe based side Ascent Academy 5-3 in post-match penalties at the Mpira Stadium to earn their first appearance.

On that occasion two years ago they managed a 1-1 draw with Lesotho Defence Force in their first game, before a 1-0 loss to Green Buffaloes and a 4-0 defeat by Double Action.

They bowed out at the group stage, but it was good experience for the club and some players remain to return for second shot at the regional tile.

It was in that same year that Malawi were crowned regional champions for the first time with victory in the COSAFA Women’s Championship.

This year Ntopwa have been drawn into the Group of Death along with two-time winners Mamelodi Sundowns, Zesco Ndola Girls from Zambia and Beauties FC from Namibia.
All those teams are likely to provide a mighty challenge in different ways.

OLYMPIC DE MORONI RETURN TO REGIONAL FINALS
Olympic de Moroni return for a third appearance at the CAF Women’s Champions League | COSAFA Qualifiers and will look to improve on their fourth-place finish on debut three years ago.

They certainly showed they have something about them having finished runner-up in their pool on debut in 2022, but fell short of the bronze medal when they lost 3-0 to Double Action Ladies from Botswana in the play-off match.

But they did record a first win in the competition with a 1-0 success against Young Buffaloes of Eswatini, which sealed their passage through to the third-place play-off.

That was the first time that a women’s club from the Comoros took part in an international competition.
They appeared again the following year, but things did not go to plan as they suffered a competition record 8-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and were also defeated 2-1 by Costa do Sol. They finished their pool play with a 3-3 draw against Young Buffaloes of Eswatini.

This time round they have been drawn in Group B along with Costa do Sol and Herentals Queens from Zimbabwe.

The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals with eight teams taking part.
