MLB Rumors: Red Sox Almost Made Biggest Splash Of Trade Deadline

The Seattle Mariners made a huge pre-trade deadline splash early on Thursday, acquiring third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

It’s probably the biggest move we’ve seen, which is why there was interest in the player from multiple teams…

The Boston Red Sox were one of them, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Jen McCaffrey, as they supposedly were in the mix for the veteran slugger with the intention of acquiring him to play first base. It’s been said that almost doesn’t count in anything other than horseshoes and hand grenades, but the club’s reported interest does tell us one thing.

Boston really wants to find itself a new first baseman…

Romy González and Abraham Toro have filled in admirably since the club lost Triston Casas in May, but the position still remains one worth upgrading. Rafael Devers’ illustrious career with the organization literally ended over its desire to find someone new — as well as his refusal to be inconvenienced, of course.

Yandy Diaz — who is slashing .283/.344/.465 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs — is said to be the club’s top choice. Ryan O’Hearn — .283/.374/.463 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs — is another division rival who has been tied to Boston. It’s not a super deep market, of course, which is why the organization considered trying to convert yet another poor fielder to the position.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow seems hell bent on acquiring someone, so no matter who it is, keep your eyes peeled until 6 p.m. ET on Thursday.
