Romy Gonzalez Had Blunt Take On Dropping Routine Line Drive

Romy Gonzalez can play just about anywhere, though second base is an area he hasn’t spent much time at this season.

He’s not using that as an excuse for a momentum-shifting gaffe Sunday afternoon.

The Boston Red Sox ultimately dropped the rubber match against Rafael Devers and the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The game was largely in the balance until the seventh, when the Red Sox were up 5-4 until Gonzalez dropped a routine liner at second.

The floodgates opened after the drop, which allowed the Giants to plate the go-ahead run. They’d ultimately score four that inning en route to a 9-5 win.

Although it was Gonzalez’ second start at the position for the Red Sox this season, it’s hardly foreign to him — he’s made more starts at second than anywhere else across his career.

Regardless, Gonzalez said after the game the mistake was inexcusable.

“We’re major leaguers, that play has to be made 100 out of 100 times,” Gonzalez said after the game, via The Athletic.

Second base is becoming an interesting position to watch for the Red Sox. Kristian Campbell had occupied the keystone until his demotion to Triple-A, with Gonzalez and David Hamilton among the options at second.

However, Hamilton has not hit well, and depending on how things unfold it is plausible one of Marcelo Mayer or Trevor Story could end up at second.
