Tottenham handed Super Cup hope as PSG are rocked at the Club World Cup

0 1

Tottenham Hotspur have just been handed evidence that PSG are far from invincible ahead of the UEFA Super Cup clash in August.

Thomas Frank faces a formidable start to tenure as Tottenham’s head coach, with his first competitive game in charge set to be the UEFA Super Cup clash in Udine against PSG on August 13.

Spurs fans are not too optimistic about their side’s chances against PSG, which is understandable, given how formidable Luis Enrique’s side looked in the Champions League last season.

Many might already be writing that game off, particularly after the French side humbled Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Club World Cup opener, but one of the tournament’s minnows have now shown that Parisians are beatable.

Botafogo show Tottenham how to beat PSG in the Super Cup

The European champions took on Botafogo, who are currently 8th in the Brazilian Serie A, in their second group game of the Club World Cup, and Enrique’s men went into the game as overwhelming favourites.

Yet, Botafogo pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset to date, with Igor Jesus’s 36th-minute strike proving enough for them to get all three points.

The Brazilian outlet came away with a clean sheet against free-scoring PSG, and their celebrations at the final whistle showed just what the result meant to them.

Why Spurs have a huge advantage for Super Cup clash

This result is evidence that the PSG players are fatigued after a long and gruelling season. They are going to have even more mileage on their legs over the course of the Club World Cup, particularly if they get to the latter stages.

Additionally, a FIFA rule could mean that PSG could be severely understrength against Tottenham in the Super Cup clash.

FIFA stipulates that players be given a minimum of three weeks’ rest after any major tournament. That means that, should PSG get to the Club World Cup final, some of their stars could be undercooked or potentially even rested for the final against Spurs.
