Kevin Danso reveals what Matt Wells has done for him behind the scenes at Tottenham

Kevin Danso has been speaking about his challenges of adapting to Tottenham’s system, and the centre-back singled out Matt Wells for helping to improve an important part of his game over the last few months.

Danso has had plenty of game time since arriving from Lens in January due to Tottenham’s injury issues and the fact that Postecoglou has kept his first-choice centre-backs wrapped up in cotton wool for the Europa League games.

The Austrian has equipped himself very well so far, with his previous Premier League experience at Southampton no doubt helping him settle in quicker.

The 26-year-old has now admitted that he has been working hard on his game in the training ground even when he has not been playing.

Kevin Danso on the challenge of adapting to Tottenham’s backline

Danso praised Matt Wells for helping him improve his defending around the box, admitting that he has learned a lot from the Tottenham assistant coach.

The centre-back said about Wells (via Football.London): “[He’s helped] in the way we want to defend in and around the box. It’s very interesting. I love playing, learning and adding to my game and he’s certainly added to my game since I’ve been here.”

The Austrian international also confessed that adapting to Tottenham’s high defensive line is a big challenge, although he suggested that the system does suit his attributes.

When asked about getting accustomed to playing in the Spurs defence, Danso said: “It’s normal. In football, you always have to adapt. My whole life I’ve been adapting, and it’s just about doing that to the best of my ability, getting used to the new players I’m playing with and the new style, and taking it on as a challenge. Obviously, I’m a professional footballer, so I take it on and use it the best I can.

“[At Spurs it’s] the high line that we play. That’s the only thing I’d say that’s a bit different, but generally, everybody in the modern day tries to play a higher line. Spurs’ [line] is really aggressive, and I like that because it plays to my strength.

“I feel like we’re always ready, we’re well prepared, we have all the solutions for every game, and it’s just about us trying to relay them on the pitch.”

Danso is impressed by Postecoglou’s speeches

Postecoglou’s pre-match talks are famous for their inspirational quality, and a number of Tottenham players have talked about how the Australian is able to get them pumped for each game.

Danso has also been mightily impressed with the Australians’ oratory prowess and ability to motivate players.

When asked how he has found Postecoglou’s speeches, Danso said: “Amazing. Honestly. Before every game, I’ve never not felt motivated ahead of the match.”
