Tottenham told they are not ready for Champions League football by one of their own former players

0 2

Paul Robinson says that the importance of Champions League football to Tottenham and their finances cannot be overstated, but he believes the current Spurs squad is not ready to compete in Europe’s premier club tournament.

As one would expect, the topic of Tottenham Hotspur and Man United making the Europa League final despite languishing close to the relegation zone in the Premier League has been discussed to death over the last 24 hours.

Pundits have been quick to install Man United as the favourites for the final, but Tottenham will certainly believe that they can get the job done, particularly considering that they have got the better of the Red Devils on three occasions already this summer.

Not only does the game provide an opportunity for the two clubs to win a major European trophy, but the winner also gets the added benefit of getting a place directly in the group stages of the Champions League, which Robinson feels neither club is ready for right now.

Paul Robinson urges Tottenham to use Champions League funds to invest in their squad

Robinson was part of the last Tottenham side which won a trophy in 2008, putting in an impressive performance between the sticks in the League Cup final against Chelsea.

The pundit pointed out that if the Lilywhites do manage to get into the big league next season, they would need to take the opportunity to make significant reinforcements to their squad in the summer.

The 45-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I said before the game that both of these squads aren’t ready for the Champions League. Both need the Champions League and the influx of money that it brings and they’ll have to recruit heavily in the summer to compete at the top end of the competition.

“A club of the size and stature of Man Utd and the recent history of where they’ve been and where they’re trying to get to, Champions League was part of their staple diet and it hasn’t been for a number of years, regularly guaranteed and especially now with the change of manager and where they are this season.

“For Tottenham, the immediate silverware and the influx of money it brings and some kind of stability, is important, and Man Utd just being associated with that competition once again.”

Why Champions League football is a must for Tottenham

When Tottenham released their financial numbers back in March, Daniel Levy warned the fans that the club’s current transfer spending is unsustainable.

Over the last two weeks, various outlets have claimed that Spurs have to sell players before they can buy this summer since the club’s net transfer debt currently stands at £279.3m.

That means that the financial boost Tottenham get from Champions League qualification will be a prerequisite for the club to continue investing in the first-team squad and close the gap with the big boys in the Premier League.
