Cajun football hosts Vermilion & White spring game
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) - The Ragin' Cajuns' spring football season ended Saturday in the annual Vermilion and White game.
Team Vermilion won this year's scrimmage 21-16.
Ole Miss transfer and St. Thomas More product Walker Howard accounted for 2 Vermilion touchdowns. He quarterbacked three scoring drives.
“I thought everyone did very well overall,” Howard said. "Our receivers did really good; our running backs did really good. The O-line did an unbelievable job — I don’t think I got touched behind the line of scrimmage, which is awesome. It was a wonderful day. I had fun and I love being here.”
The Vermilion defense also made a stop on fourth down. Head coach Michael DeSormeaux was pleased with both defenses' competitiveness.
"You don't ever want your defense to concede. You know the white team ended up scoring before half, but that was a heck of a stand," DeSormeaux said. "You know, there is less than a minute left, probably four or five plays inside the one-yard line. Contest it all. Contest all 100 yards on the field."
While the spring work is done, Desormeaux said the work is just getting beginning.
"Team practices that we have in the summer are going to be critical for us to continue growing and developing." DesSormeaux said. "We got to get this team where we are healthy, we're strong, we're fast, we're knowledgeable about what we're trying to do, that way when we get to fall camp, you hit the ground running, because everything builds off of the next."
Louisiana opens its season August 30 against Rice at the refurbished Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium.
