Red Sox Place Triston Casas On Injured List, Call Up Replacement
The Boston Red Sox have a new everyday first baseman.
Boston placed first baseman Triston Casas on the injured list with a left patellar tendon rupture. Abraham Toro was recalled to replace him on the 26-man roster. Brennan Bernardino was also reinstated from the bereavement list, with Luis Guerrero being optioned to Triple-A Worcester to make room.
Casas went down with the injury during Friday night’s victory over the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park, needing to be stretchered off the field. Red Sox manager Alex Cora didn’t have any concrete updates following the game, but did call it “significant” in his media availability.
Toro, 28, signed a minor league contract with the organization late in the offseason. The Red Sox had familiarity with his game due to his experience playing in the American League, and watched him thrive during the spring to the tune of a .310/.356/.595 slash line, four doubles and two home runs across 42 plate appearances in 21 total games.
Toro makes sense due to the way he’s able to complement sudden starter Romy Gonzalez, as he is a switch hitter with years of experience with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics. He will wear No. 29.
The Red Sox did not have to open up a spot on the active roster, allowing them to select the veteran without making any other moves. Casas will likely be moved from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list.
