This was because, in the two weeks leading up to those comments, it was widely reported that Atletico Madrid have reached out to Romero regarding a summer transfer.
In fact, some sources have even claimed that Romero could potentially agitate for a move this summer, which could help Atletico bring down Tottenham’s asking price.

Relevo have now become the latest outlet to report on Atletico’s interest in the Tottenham man, referring to the Spurs vice-captain as the La Liga club’s ‘great desire’ of the summer window.
The outlet explains that while Romero is fully focused on having a strong end to the season at Tottenham, he has already said ‘yes’ to the Spanish side.
This is mainly because the 27-year-old is ‘fascinated’ by the idea of working under his compatriot Diego Simeone next season.
However, the report points out that Tottenham are asking for a ‘very high amount’ and the transfer very much depends on how Atletico’s contact with the North London club goes.
The La Liga side are not expected to reach out to Spurs regarding the centre-back until the end of the season.
