MLS club reportedly emerges as Kevin De Bruyne’s next destination after Manchester City exit
The end of an era is approaching in the Premier League. Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has officially announced his departure from Manchester City, leaving his next move up in the air. At 33 years old, a Major League Soccer club has reportedly emerged as De Bruyne’s next destination.
De Bruyne’s contract situation has been one of the most talked-about storylines since the start of the season. However, ongoing injury setbacks derailed any serious extension talks with City. Unable to return to his peak form, De Bruyne released an emotional statement on social media confirming his intention to leave the club at the end of the season.
According to TalkSport, Kevin De Bruyne is now expected to join San Diego FC once his contract expires. The Saudi Pro League has also expressed interest in acquiring the Belgian star in recent years, but sources suggest he is more inclined to make the move to MLS.
In fact, The Athletic reported back in January that De Bruyne’s potential transfer to San Diego “looked closer than ever.” With his City departure now official, the door is wide open for negotiations to resume.
San Diego FC has already signed Andreas Dreyer and Hirving “Chucky” Lozano as Designated Players, with one DP slot still available—leaving room for De Bruyne. Should the deal happen, he would reunite with former Chelsea teammate Juan Mata, now part-owner of the expansion club.
Pep Guardiola on De Bruyne’s departure
Since arriving in 2015, Kevin De Bruyne has solidified his status as one of the Premier League’s greatest midfielders. Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola reflected on the departure of his longtime star.
“It’s a sad day because a part of us is leaving,” Guardiola said. “When Vincent (Kompany), Sergio (Aguero), or David Silva left, it was the same feeling. These players have given so much. We still have 10, hopefully 11 games left this season—including six at home—so we’ll enjoy them with our fans and make sure he gets the recognition he deserves.”
Manchester City has confirmed plans to bid an emotional farewell to De Bruyne when his contract concludes. His departure will mark the end of a legendary 10-year run in English soccer, where he collected 6 Premier League titles.
