Ex-Red Sox Target Receives Devastating Injury News After Brutal 2024

The Jordan Montgomery era in Arizona has been a nightmare, as a number of teams including the Red Sox might be wondering what would have been.

After enduring the worst season of his career with the Diamondbacks in 2024, Montgomery won’t have a chance to rebound in 2025. According to multiple reports, he needs to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, a devastating development and a brutal end to a forgetful year-long run.

Montgomery hoped to parlay a sensational 2023 season he capped with a World Series title in Texas into a massive deal. That contract never really materialized. The Red Sox, reportedly his preferred landing spot, were among the teams with reported interest in the left-hander, and he eventually signed a one-year, $25 million deal with a vesting option with Arizona. That contract vested at $22.5 million with 18 starts but also gave Montgomery a chance to opt out if he made at least 10 starts.

Well, he made 21 starts (appearing in 25 games) for Arizona in 2024 and was brutal. His strikeout numbers took a pretty sharp drop, his walk rate increased and his hits-per-nine number jumped up to 11.5. The 31-year-old finished the season with an 8-7 record that only told part of the story, with Montgomery logging 117 innings with an ERA of 6.23.

His minus-1.4 WAR (Baseball Reference) was easily the worst of his career. Obviously, he didn’t opt out of that $22.5 million guaranteed.

Teams that tried to sign Montgomery last winter might not be the only clubs breathing an effective sigh of relief. According to reports, the Diamondbacks had multiple teams interested in potentially trading for Montgomery this spring.

That obviously won’t happen now.
