Celtics Reportedly Lose Key Member Of Front Office To College Job

Rumors always seemed to swirl about Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens returning to the college ranks.

But it appears a different member of Boston’s front office chose to take that path.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported Tuesday that Celtics director of scouting Remy Cofield is leaving the illustrious franchise to become the general manager for the Arkansas athletic department.

Cofield, who is a Newton, Mass. native and played college basketball at Penn, spent nearly 12 years with the Celtics, working his way up from a business development intern to a scout for four seasons. He also was the GM of Boston’s G League affiliate for five years and served as the Celtics director of scouting for the last four years.

Cofield certainly had a hand in shaping a stellar Celtics roster — he was gets part of the credit for the developments of Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet — that won an NBA title last season and is in good position to repeat as champions this year.

“There used to be this idea that you had to play a sport at the highest levels in order to understand and contribute to the front office or coaching staff,” Cofield said in a story appearing in Bentley Magazine in 2021. “I believe that intelligent people, regardless of their background, can be impactful for a team.”

Cofield will now try to put his fingerprints on the athletic programs at Arkansas. He has his work cut out for him as the Razorbacks finished middle of the pack in the SEC in football this season and John Calipari’s squad endured a similar fate on the hardwood.
