Jose Mourinho laughs at comment about Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham tactics
Jose Mourinho seemingly thinks that Ange Postecoglou’s style is too open, with the former Tottenham manager breaking out in laughter at a comment that was made about the Australian’s system.
Postecoglou was brought in to implement an attacking style of football at Tottenham on the back of the fans being exasperated by the negative approach they saw under the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
The Australian has been successful in delivering that, although he is yet to show that he can consistently get results with his style and take the club where they want to be.
The 59-year-old is also very different to the likes of Mourinho and Conte when it comes to the way he addresses the media, often choosing to take the blame for bad results rather than throw his players under the bus.
Jose Mourinho vs Ange Postecoglou – Tottenham tactical contrasts
Mourinho, who is currently at the helm at Fenerbahce in Turkey, spoke to his former player John Obi Mikel on his own podcast, with Spurs being mentioned when the conversation turned to his tactics.
The former Chelsea midfielder asked the Portuguese coach if he prefers to see his side focus on their defending or on creating chances and scoring goals.
Mourinho responded on The Obi One Podcast: “If you only defend, you need to be very lucky to win. If you only attack, you need to be very lucky to win or very dominant – your team is much better than the others.
“It’s difficult for me to answer because you have to find a balance. But, if you ask me if I prefer to see the ball close to my goal or close to the opponent’s goal – when the ball is in the opponent’s half. But, you still have to think about transition.”
Mikel then replied: “Exactly, and that’s what Spurs don’t do right now!”, and the Special One was seen bursting out laughing at Mikel’s subtle dig at his former employers.
The best managers these days play an expansive brand of football
What we are seeing across the Premier League over the last decade is that the very best teams look to play on the front foot and create chances.
The last team to win the title in England playing a counter-attacking style was Conte’s Chelsea all the way back in 2016-17.
If Tottenham are to have the ambition of getting 80-90 points per season eventually, they are not going to do that by hiring someone like Mourinho, with evidence suggesting that his methods are no longer as effective as they once were.
