Mathys Tel reveals how a chat with Ange Postecoglou in a barbershop convinced him to join Tottenham

0 6

Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Mathys Tel has now revealed what manager Ange Postecoglou told him that convinced him to join the Lilywhites.

In the just concluded winter window, Mathys Tel was one of the most sought-after talents as several clubs in the Premier League were looking to secure his signature.

Tottenham Hotspur were close to signing Tel earlier in the window, but the deal fell through after talks with the club’s chairman.

It was not until deadline day, when Tel received a phone call from Ange Postecoglou himself, that he decided to make the switch to North London.

Tel eventually signed for Spurs on a deadline day loan, with a £45.7m option to buy and a six-year contract already agreed. He has now revealed what the manager told him during that famous phone call.

He said speaking on Spursplay: “So I was at the barber’s; one side was good (his hair) and the other side was crazy. He told me, ‘I think you are a good player for the team. I think you can bring some new energy, something special for the team.

“‘We have to win a lot of games this season’, and this discussion was positive for me. I found time to play; before, I didn’t have time to play.

“Now I have played with the team twice for 90 minutes. It is two times, but for me, it is a lot, and that is very cool for me. With the coach, we talked—I think at 9 pm or 10 pm, very, very late—but it was a good discussion. We talked again after training, and he told me, ‘I believe in you, so keep going, keep working hard, and let’s see what we do.'”

Tel’s minutes at Bayern Munich compared to Spurs

Indeed, game time was one of the major reasons the young forward decided to make the switch from Germany to England.

Without a doubt, hearing his future boss guarantee him that he would get minutes upon joining must have made him feel much more at ease.

Ange Postecoglou’s track record of giving youngsters a chance this season would have provided further reassurance that his playing time at Spurs would only increase.

Thus far, that has been the case, as the young forward has played 90 minutes on two occasions in his brief time at Spurs—a feat he never achieved at Bayern Munich.
