David Longwell Appointed Assistant Head Coach
AFC Fylde are delighted to announce the appointment of David Longwell as our new First Team Assistant Head Coach.
Longwell will join Kevin Phillips in coaching the Men’s First Team and will be in the dugout for the first time this weekend as we take on Wealdstone at Mill Farm.
Longwell joins the coaching staff at Mill Farm with a wealth of experience within English football after fulfilling a number of roles previously.
In 2019, Longwell was appointed Academy Manager at Shrewsbury Town before taking up a coaching role within the first team in November 2020.
The Scotsman worked in the role for three years, assisting Steve Cotterill with first team duties. He was credited very highly for his work completed with the academy and creating a pathway for academy players to make their way into the first team.
In 2023, Longwell joined Premier League side Burnley as their Academy Manager, returning to a role focussed on helping academy products work their way into a first-team environment.
Longwell saw great success at Burnley as their under 21’s thrived in league and cup competitions, winning the Central League Cup in a thrilling final against Derby County. His time at Turf Moor also saw him work with current Coasters loanees Dan Sassi and Will Hugill.
With AFC Fylde’s Academy producing some of it’s best every performances across league and cup competitions in recent weeks, it’s a very exciting time to introduce someone into the first team environment with such experience of developing young players and nurturing them into senior footballers.
Speaking after joining the club, Longwell said: “It’s brilliant to be here. I spoke to the Manager and the Chairman and there is a really good feeling around the club.
“I know our current position in the league isn’t where we want to be but there are so many positives here.
“The infrastructure to what the guys are doing is brilliant and there’s a great vibe around the place.
“First and foremost, I’m here to support the Manager and then the players. I pride myself on working hard and helping every individual wherever I can and I’ll try my very best to improve the results as best as I can.”
A full interview with David will be posted on the club website shortly.
