Tottenham unable to sign senior centre-back target due to wage demands
Paris Saint-Germain’s Milan Skriniar had emerged as a key target for Tottenham Hotspur, however, recent reports suggest that the negotiations were complicated by differing visions for the deal’s structure.
Tottenham’s defensive woes prompt winter reinforcements
The injury struggles of Tottenham Hotspur’s central defenders have left manager Ange Postecoglou short of reliable options at the heart of his defence, prompting the club to prioritise reinforcements this January.
In this context, it has emerged that Tottenham were actively exploring options to bolster their defensive ranks, with Paris Saint-Germain’s Milan Skriniar firmly on their radar.
The Slovakian defender, known for his commanding presence and experience, is reportedly one of several targets Tottenham are considering as they navigate a challenging winter transfer window.
Interest in Milan Skriniar is not exclusive to Tottenham, with other clubs also reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
However, Tottenham’s need for immediate defensive reinforcements has given their pursuit of the Slovakian international a greater sense of urgency, particularly as PSG are understood to be open to offers for the player.
Tottenham and PSG negotiations for Milan Skriniar
Reports from reputable sources have now shed new light on Tottenham’s pursuit of Milan Skriniar, revealing how negotiations between the two clubs are shaping up.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Spurs are considering the possibility of an initial loan for the 29-year-old centre-back. However, Paris Saint-Germain reportedly prefer a permanent transfer, making it clear that they want Skriniar‘s departure to align with their long-term plans.
The Daily Mail also report that Tottenham were offered Milan Skriniar but his wages proved to be a ‘stumbling block’ to a January deal.
A pragmatic strategy for January
Ange Postecoglou has made it clear that Tottenham’s focus this winter is on players who can make an immediate impact, rather than looking too far ahead into the future.
Earlier this month, Postecoglou addressed the club’s approach to January recruitment, stating, “What we need right now is some able bodies who can help us get through this period,”
Given this stance, Skriniar’s age, and his availability, a loan move for the centre-back would align perfectly with Tottenham’s short-term objectives – whether PSG will accept their offer remains to be seen.
