Tottenham sold statistically the ‘best player’ in La Liga for just £8m this summer

Ange Postecoglou finally managed to overhaul his squad en masse this summer, and cleared out pretty much every fringe player and outcast he could have hoped for. But, one player he let go has been on fire since leaving Spurs.

Mass exodus was important for Spurs

After years of Tottenham trudging on with the same spine of players in the first-team squad, the time came this summer for the club to carry out something of an exodus and clear the decks.

Players who struggled to make an impact under Ange Postecoglou, like Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Bryan Gil, and Oliver Skipp were moved on, either permanently or on loan.

Meanwhile, players who had spent a considerable amount of time away from the club, like Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga, and Tanguy Ndombele, all left, too.

As the transfer window neared its conclusion, Postecoglou was left with only Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso as potential outgoings, and while Reguilon remains, Lo Celso sealed a dream move back to Spain to rejoin Real Betis.

Lo Celso shining in Spain

The deal to take Lo Celso back to Betis was an incredibly cheap one, given he was into the final 12 months of his contract with Spurs — Betis paid just £8m for Lo Celso, according to BBC Sport.

Tottenham may be regretting that decision now, as Lo Celso has been in scintillating form for the La Liga outfit. The playmaker has scored five goals in six games for his new club already this season.

Thanks to his great form, Lo Celso now has the best average rating of any player in La Liga in 2024/25, with a SofaScore rating of 8.27. He is the only non-Barcelona or Real Madrid player to make the top six.

Lo Celso beat Barcelona’s Raphinha (8.01) and Lamine Yamal (7.94) to top the rankings as things stand.

Spurs made the right call

It may be frustrating to see Lo Celso doing so well now he has left Spurs, but it’s important to remember that he is playing in a very different league now, and one that he clearly finds more suitable for his style of play. Plus, if we didn’t sell him when we did, we would only have continued paying his wages, and lost him for nothing next summer.
