Robbie Savage admits he could sack HIMSELF just four games into his first manager job at non-league side

ROBBIE SAVAGE admits he could sack HIMSELF after only four games as manager of non-league side Macclesfield.

Former Premier League star Savage was already a part-owner of the Silkmen when he was appointed their new boss in June.

Macclesfield FC, the phoenix club of now-defunct side Macclesfield Town, were created in 2020 and now find themselves in the Northern Premier League.

After missing out on promotion to the National League North with a second-place finish last term, chiefs turned to Savage for his experience as a top-flight footballer.

He’s since taken charge of four matches, winning three and drawing one.

And after also getting to play director of football by shaping the squad in his favour, Savage knows the pressure is on to secure promotion.

Indeed, with just four games in the bag, the Welsh icon admits he could sack himself at the end of the season if Macclesfield do not go up.

Savage told The Mirror: “If I fail, I know my time will be up.

“I won’t be able to go back to being a director of football, sitting in the stands and judging other people if I’ve come up short. I know everything is on the line.

“Some of the stuff that was said when I took on the job was unpleasant to say the least. It was a horrible summer.

“But this team will get in the play-offs, and I believe we will go up, but if we don’t win promotion I will walk away from the dugout, take a back seat as a part-owner and watch from afar.

“There will be people who hope I fall flat on my face, but if that happens it won’t be for a lack of effort.”

Reflecting on his brief time in the dugout so far, Savage added: “I’m starting from a great platform, just missing out on promotion last season and with the acquisitions we’ve made.

“Ten points from four games is a good start and it should have been 12.

“I’ve never been one to call for this manager to go or that manager to be sacked, but now I’ve had a taste of it, I have only respect for those who step into the lions’ den.

“I know I’m going to be dug out if I lose games, and I’ll be judged on results like every other manager.”
