Toney on target and Richarlison’s injury woes

Having played at every level of the English Football League, Brentford’s 28-year-old striker has a wealth of experience to offer. He has already proven himself in England’s top flight, scoring 20 league goals in the 2022/23 season (Premier League).

Although Toney’s game time was limited last season due to his eight-month betting ban (Sky Sports), his performances on his return to football were enough to see him selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad (England Football).

Meanwhile, Richarlison has struggled to get a good run in the first team, facing multiple spells on the sidelines due to hamstring and knee injuries, as well as a groin surgery last November (Transfer Markt).

Should Spurs replace Richarlison with Toney?

Tottenham have been heavily linked with Ivan Toney throughout the summer and the Brentford striker is apparently hoping the Lilywhites bid for him in the coming weeks (TalksSPORT).

Alan Hutton told Football Insider that Toney would be a great signing, and that he would be better off at Tottenham than Aston Villa this summer.

He said: “They’re [Tottenham] crying out for a striker.

“They need that guy who’s going to score 20-plus goals for them, who’s going to help them get back into that top four. He’s [Toney] brilliant and I think he’s the one that you need.”

“I think there’ll be more opportunity at Tottenham for him [than Aston Villa], and Richarlison could be leaving. I know [Heung min] Son’s played up there, but I prefer him from the left, so I think that could be a good move if they’re willing to pay the money.”

Richarlison has shown glimpses of what he is capable of at Tottenham. He hit double figures for goals last season, despite his injury problems.

On top of this, he spoke openly about his mental health struggles and showed resilience to overcome them, continuing to give his all on the pitch.

But there is no denying that Toney is a top-class goal scorer, and he would be a brilliant addition to Tottenham’s squad. He’s the ideal replacement.
