Former MLB GM Endorses Craig Breslow’s Red Sox Trade Deadline Approach

Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow finally showed his cards about what he will do at next week’s trade deadline.

After weeks of talk about picking the right lane at deadline, Breslow revealed the Red Sox will be buyers, not sellers.

That’s an approach that got a thumbs up from former New York Mets general manager Zack Scott, who also spent over a decade with the Red Sox in various front office roles. Scott joined NESN’s “310 To Left” podcast Friday to discuss the Red Sox, including Breslow’s handling of the lead-up to the deadline.

“As far as what Craig said, I think it’s great,” Scott said. “I guess I’m not surprised. I think they’re in a position where they have an opportunity to make the wild card. Now that it’s not just a one game coin-flip game, they have a better chance than when it used to be those rules to win a three-game series. So, I think what makes me happy about that, to hear that, is that they’re picking a lane and I think that’s what’s most important.

“Now does it mean that they’re all in on rentals and things like that? It probably shouldn’t mean that. It probably should mean they’re looking to get either value deals on rentals or deals that help them for both this year and in the future.”

Breslow already made a trade before the July 30 deadline. The Red Sox acquired left-handed pitcher James Paxton from the Los Angeles Dodgers, which could fit into Scott’s category of getting a value deal on a rental.
