'Tragic accident': College football player found dead after apparent drowning

CACHE COUNTY, Utah (KTVX) — Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. has died in an apparent drowning in northern Utah, according to authorities.

Shortly after 2 p.m. MT on Saturday, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said it was searching for a young man after he was seen diving from cliffs at Porcupine Reservoir and did not resurface. The reservoir is located about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City and 40 miles south of the Idaho border.

His body was found by a dive team at around 9 p.m. Saturday.

“Our investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information,” the Cache County sheriff’s office said.

Authorities identified the man as 22-year-old Andre Seldon Jr., a cornerback for Utah State. Details were limited, but authorities believe Seldon drowned.

“Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own,” said interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling. “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”

Seldon transferred to Utah State this summer from New Mexico State, where he played defensive back for Dreiling. He spent his first two seasons of college football at the University of Michigan after playing for nearby Belleville High School.

Seldon started 28 games for New Mexico State, was voted a team captain, and had 98 tackles, two interceptions, 13 pass breakups, and five tackles for loss. He also had a pick-six for the Aggies last year.

Seldon transferred to TCU this winter but reentered the portal this spring and transferred to Utah State, where he was expected to compete for a starting spot in the secondary.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr.,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”
