Report: Atletico Madrid do not have Spurs player at the top of their wishlist

According to the print edition of AS (as relayed by Sport Witness), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is not Atletico Madrid’s top midfield target this summer.

Atletico Madrid have been linked with Hojbjerg

At the start of this week, The Daily Mail revealed that Atletico ‘rekindled’ their interest in Hojbjerg after failing to get a deal for him over the line 12 months ago.

The outlet says that the Dane was left disappointed last year when his proposed transfer to the Metropolitano Stadium did not materialise, with the La Liga club said to have maintained contact with the player’s entourage since then.

It was explained that Diego Simeone’s side were ready to try their luck again for the 28-year-old, having freed up space in the wage bill for the Spurs man by offloading the likes of Memphis Depay and Stefan Savic.

Ange Postecoglou kept him in the squad this last season, but mostly his 36 appearances were restricted to being from the bench.

Atletico like other midfielders more than Hojbjerg

However, AS has now dismissed suggestions that Hojbjerg is Atletico’s top target, stating that they prefer two midfielders over the Spurs man.

The report says that Celtic’s Matt O’Riely and Feyenoord’s Mats Wieffer are at the top of the Rojiblancos’ wishlist.

The publication adds that the La Liga giants can spend €20m (£16.8m) on a new midfield recruit, with the Celtic and Feyenoord players both expected to be valued at around that price.

Hojbjerg will be in action for Denmark tomorrow when they kick off their Euro 2024 campaign with a match against Slovenia.

Spurs Web Opinion

Simeone prefers experienced players who are proven at the highest level and I would be surprised if he prioritises a move for O’Riley or Wieffer over Hojbjerg, particularly given that the Dane has been on Atletico’s radar for a long time.

Either way, I expect Spurs to have no problem getting at least £15m for Hojbjerg this summer.
