‘Misconception about me’ – Ange Postecoglou claims he has surprises up his sleeve

It’s the final weekend of the Premier League season, and Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the press ahead of Tottenham’s curtain closer against Sheffield United on Sunday. But, he says people should not assume he will play a certain way, and hints he has plenty of gameplans available.

Since arriving at Tottenham last summer, Postecoglou has implemented an attacking, exciting brand of football at the club.

Dubbed Ange-Ball, the system operates with inverted full-backs, progressive passing out of defence, and lots of play down the wing. It also employs a high line, which has led to a certain degree of openness at the back for Spurs this year.

It has been a largely successful year of transition for Spurs, but there has been a suggestion in recent weeks, due to the poor form we’ve seen from the Lilywhites, that teams in the Premier League have figured them out.

Ange Postecoglou has more than one formation in mind

On Tuesday night against Manchester City, however, we saw Spurs use James Maddison as a false nine. In his press conference today (via Football.London), Postecoglou discussed that tactical switch on Tuesday and explained that he has always been open to trying other approaches to the game.

He said: “There’s a misconception about me that I’ve got one plan. I’ve probably used every formation and system going over the years, usually many in a game.”

It would be very foolish to only have one formation and one style of play at all times. Obviously, we have to have an identity and a certain ethos, but that doesn’t mean Postecoglou can’t be flexible and pragmatic in order to change a game.

I wouldn’t say the false nine exactly worked on Tuesday night, but we certainly looked sharper than we have in recent weeks. So maybe it’s more about keeping things fresh, rather than one specific formation being the key.
