Twist in the Pochettino story with Chelsea post-season meeting on the horizon

After Chelsea have completed their 2023/24 Premier League season against Bournemouth, attention will turn to the future of first-team manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

A post-season meeting has been scheduled for some while now, with the specific intention of discussing Chelsea’s season as a whole and whether the Argentinian should be sacked or is worthy of the chance to continue at Stamford Bridge.

Of course, Pochettino himself may spring a surprise and walk out on the club after too much meddling from above, but the truth is that nothing will be decided before that meeting.

Pochettino to be sacked?

A superb recent run in the Premier League has seen the Blues on the verge of qualifying for European football next season, and given how poorly things began, a Europa League berth would be a worthwhile consolation.

Perhaps more than that, Pochettino now has his squad playing in the manner that he’d like, and the green shoots of recovery can certainly be seen.

Players such as Cole Palmer have been a revelation, whilst those that have returned from long-term injuries such as Reece James and Christopher Nkunku to name just two, are giving the side the balance that it’s been missing for long periods.

Can Mauricio Pochettino survive a vote of confidence at Chelsea?

The Pochettino project was always going to take time to come to fruition, more so because it had been shorn of experienced heads.

That the manager has got the team where it has going into the final day is nothing short of sensational.

That may be why the Argentinian apparently has the support of key figures at the club according to The Guardian (subscription required).

Even if owner Todd Boehly seems to think that his ‘hire ’em and fire ’em’ philosophy will work at a football club, the American would do well to accept the opinions of those around him before bringing the axe down.

If he truly does want Chelsea to progress, then he needs to allow Pochettino the time and space to get to work.

The Argentinian showed at Tottenham what he can achieve with the right sort of backing, and Boehly would bite your hand off for a Champions League final berth at this stage.

Should Pochettino survive the meeting, back him in the transfer market, keep key players such as Conor Gallagher and 12 months from now Chelsea will be in a much better place.
