[Men's Soccer] Men's Soccer wins 3-0 in fall season finale

The Viterbo University Men's Soccer team earned their third victory against Maranatha Baptist University for the season and improved their overall record to 9-1 (3-0 A.I.I). The V-Hawks smothered Maranatha Baptist defensively and allowed just one shot the entire game. On the attacking side of the field, the V-Hawks racked up a total of 35 shots and put 16 on the frame. Viterbo got out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Benian Yao (Fr. - Waxhaw, N.C.) and the V-Hawks put the game on cruise control. In the second half, Alfie Gyurkovits (Gr. - Cranage, England) put the V-Hawks up 2-0 (59') and Arsenios Dimitriou (Fr. - Limassol, Cyprus) put the icing on the cake to make it a 3-0 victory (70').

The real highlight of the day was celebrating the lone senior on the team, Sam Guilbeault (Sr. - Algonquin, Ill.). In what may have been his last game, emotions ran high for Sam but he tried to keep his head down and focus on the team's success. "I tried to focus up and try to remember it's not all about me, it's about the team," said Guilbeault after the game. "This is the best team we've had in all the years I've been here, and I tried to keep them in my mind".  

Sam reflected on his time as a V-Hawk and said he will miss the team the most when he graduates. "[I will miss] the comradery and brotherhood. My best friends -my brothers- are on this team. I will miss this tight-knit group…"

Sam has always been a team player and has played an instrumental role in shaping the future of the program as the only senior on the team. Head Coach Luke Dunn said, "Sam has been a leader in changing the culture of the team, and has been instrumental in pushing himself and his teammates to become better. His maturity and leadership have stood out amongst our young team, and the lessons he has taught the other players by leading through example has made a very valuable impact on the team." 

The win in his final game meant everything to Sam. "Obviously this season it's not that strange to get a win, but this one feels pretty good."
