Morning Briefing: McNeil Goes the Way of Alonso, Díaz, Nimmo

Good morning, Mets fans!

Yesterday, Jeff McNeil was traded to the Athletics for 17-year-old rookie ball arm Yordan Rodriguez

The trade of McNeil continues the complete retooling of the Mets roster going into the 2026 season. Over eight seasons with the Mets, McNeil accumulated 23.0 WAR, made two All-Star appearances and won the batting title in 2022.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reported that the Mets also will be sending the A’s $5.75 million to help cover McNeil’s $15.75 million salary, plus the $2 million buyout on a club option for next year. 

Regarding Rodriguez, this past summer he posted a posted a 2-0 record with a 2.93 ERA over 15 1/3 innings, striking out 20 in the Dominican Summer League. He is expected to be assigned in early 2026 to the Mets complex in Port St. Lucie, via Francys Romero.

The Mets officially announced the signing of reliever Luke Weaver. Jon Heyman of the NY Post added in the contract details.

Juan Soto received permission from the Mets to play in winter ball if the Tigres del Licey reached the playoffs, but they were eliminated from contention on Monday.

The Marlins announced that Ronny Henriquez underwent right elbow UCL reconstruction with an associated internal brace. A full recovery is expected by spring training in 2027.

1996: After not playing with a team during the 1996 season, Todd Pratt signs a minor league contract with the Mets. Pratt spent four and a half seasons in Queens and hit the only postseason home run of his career to send New York to the NLCS in 1999.

1999: The Mets trade Roger Cedeño, Octavio Dotel and Kyle Kessel to the Astros for Derek Bell and Mike Hampton. Hampton went 15-10 with a 3.14 ERA in his only season in New York.
