Mets Sign Jorge Polanco to Two-Year Contract
The New York Mets have signed free agent Jorge Polanco to a two-year, $40 million contract, according to Will Sammon of the Athletic. Polanco, entering his age-32 season, slashed .265/.326/.495 for an .821 OPS and 132 wRC+ across 138 games. He hit 26 HRs and drove in 78 RBIs and mostly split time between the designated hitter spot and second base, while filling in at third base and first base briefly.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that Polanco will primarily play first base and designated hitter for the Mets. He also had the report of the contract details.
Polanco brings to the Mets a plus hit tool with his 86% zone contact (70th percentile) and lack of swing and miss with his 15.7% K rate (83rd percentile). He is a switch-hitter who has averaged 28.7 HRs and 88.9 RBIs per 162 games across his last three seasons.
The signing continues the theme of short contracts for the Mets this season. Marcus Semien only has three years left on his deal, Devin Williams was signed to a three-year contract, and now Polanco will be in Queens for the next two seasons.
