Rumor Roundup: Mets Linked to Schwarber, King, Suarez

0 2

With the Winter Meetings underway, the hope is that the hot stove heats up and signings start to come. Monday started with a bit of a banger, with the NY Post reporting that the Mets have shown interest in slugger Kyle Schwarber.

Schwarber, who turns 33 in March, has mashed 187 homers over the last four seasons with the Phillies with a .226/.349/.507/.856 slash line.

The Mets have had a designated hitter problem for years, rarely finding consistency from a single player at the position. J.D. Martinez was the closest the team got to solving the issue, and Schwarber would be a boon. MLB Trade Rumors projected Schwarber to sign a five-year deal worth $135 million this offseason.

Signing Schwarber would likely preclude the Mets from bringing back Pete Alonso, who will make his rounds at the Winter Meetings this week.

Mets Connected to King, Suarez

The Mets have also talked to pitcher Michael King, per Joel Sherman.

King has been nails for San Diego over the last two seasons, notching a 3.10 ERA over 247 innings. He missed time in 2025 with shoulder issues but rebounded well to end the year. He was traded to the Padres from the Yankees in a package for Juan Soto.

Another former San Diego Padre, Robert Suarez, was connected to the Mets by Fansided‘s Robert Murray. The Mets, fresh off signing Devin Williams, need to continue to bolster their bullpen. An Edwin Díaz reunion continues to be discussed, but the Mets are turning over every leaf at the top of the free agent reliever market.

Mets Sign Edwards Jr.

In other news, the Mets have inked reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training, according to Will Sammon.

The 34-year-old has pitched minimally in the majors recently, facing just 27 batters over the last two seasons across three teams. He’s spent plenty of time in the minors and the Mexican League, though.

Pivetta May Be Available

The Padres will listen on offers for Nick Pivetta, according to The Athletic‘s Dennis Lin.

“A deal involving the right-hander is not considered likely — San Diego would require a steep return in exchange for losing Pivetta — but the team’s options for rebalancing its payroll are limited,” Lin said.

Pivetta will earn $19 million next season, then have an opt out after the season. The 32-year-old was the best Padres pitcher last year, notching a 2.87 ERA (3.49 FIP) over 181 2/3 innings.

Other Rumors

  • Mike Soroka signed a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks
  • The Nationals apparently are listening to offers on MacKenzie Gore AND CJ Abrams.
