Mets Drop Fifth Straight Game in 11-3 Loss to Philadelphia
After losing the last four games in a row and five of the last six, the Mets were hoping to turn things around and get back in the win column and keep their position in the wild card rankings, in which the San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds trailed close behind them.
Yet, those hopes fell short, and the Mets could not get things going offensively. They were 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base as the Phillies defeated the Mets 11-3 to take the series win.

Juan Soto was 3-for-5 on the night with two RBIs, and Starling Marte went 2-for-4 with an RBI. But the Phillies out-hit the Mets 14-9.
Clay Holmes (11-7, 3.70 ERA, 122 SO) was on the hill for the Mets, and in the bottom of the first, he was quickly in his first jam of the day. Holmes gave up a lead-off single to Harrison Bader, walked Kyle Schwarber, and hit Bryce Harper by a pitch to quickly load the bases with no outs. J.T. Realmuto then singled to center field to put the Phillies on top 1-0 and kept the bases loaded. Two batters later, Holmes hit Max Kepler to allow Schwarber to score, and the Phillies had a 2-0 lead early, marking a consecutive game the Mets were down by two runs after the first inning.
The Mets got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. After Soto reached for the second time on the day on a triple turned ground-rule double on a fan interference, Pete Alonso singled two batters later to move Soto to third, and Marte put the Mets on the scoreboard with an RBI single to left field.
The Phillies then extended their lead in the fifth. After Realmuto led off with a single to third base, Brandon Marsh hit an RBI double that scored Realmuto.
That was all for Holmes as the Mets went to the bullpen, bringing in Gregory Soto to replace Holmes on the mound with the Phillies up 3-1.
With Soto on the mound, Kepler hit an RBI single to center field that scored Brandon Marsh, and the Phillies extended their lead to 4-1.
The Phillies then opened their lead even more in the bottom of the sixth. Soto hit Bader and gave up a single to Schwarber. Two batters later, Realmuto was hit to load the bases, and Marsh hit an RBI single that scored Bader, followed by an RBI single by Kepler that scored two, and the Phillies’ lead was quickly 7-1 with just one out.
Ryne Stanek then got the call to replace Soto on the mound. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Otto Kemp to make it an 8-1 Phillies lead before he finally got out of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Phillies kept pouring it on as Harper hit a solo home run to make it a 9-1 Phillies lead.
The Mets got one back in the bottom of the eighth as Soto stayed hot, hitting a solo home run on his third hit of the day, but the Mets still trailed the Phillies 9-2.
But the Phillies answered right back in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by Kepler to make it 10-2. Three batters later, with two on, Ryan Helsley got Donovan Walton to ground out, but Kemp scored, and it was 11-2 Phillies.
The Mets tried to get another rally going in the ninth. Hayden Senger and Cedric Mullins hit back-to-back one-out singles. They were followed by an RBI single by Brett Baty to get a run back, as it was then 11-3 Phillies.
But the Mets left bases loaded in the ninth as the Phillies went on to defeat the Mets 11-3, which also gave them the series win.
With their loss to the Phillies, the Mets also trail Philadelphia now by 10 games in the NL East. They maintain a two-game lead over the Giants for the final National League wild card spot.

Wednesday night’s Metsmerized player of the game is Juan Soto, who was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
