Guardians Sweep Mets’ Lethargic Offense

0 3

The New York Mets once again fell short on Wednesday afternoon in the series finale against the Cleveland Guardians, suffering their fifth series sweep of the 2025 season.

The Mets’ only hit of the day came in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run by Juan Soto, who prevented the Mets from being no-hit and shutout by Cleveland right-handed pitcher Gavin Williams. It was the first hit the Mets have had in the last 14 innings, but they still fell to the Guardians, 4-1.

The only other runners the Mets had on base in the game came on three walks in the bottom of the second and a walk in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Nimmo represented three of those walks as he was on base three times on Wednesday.

On the other side of the field, Mets starter David Peterson didn’t have the worst outing, but two home runs and a triple hurt him. His final line: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 HR, 2.98 ERA

David Fry got the Guardians on the board early with a solo home run to lead off the top of the second off Peterson.

With one on in the top of the third, Angel Martinez hit the Guardians’ second home run of the day to left field off Peterson to extend the Guardians’ lead to 3-0 over the Mets.

In the top of the sixth, Gabriel Arias hit an RBI triple to right field to make it a 4-0 Guardians lead.

David Peterson was done after six innings as Carlos Mendoza went to the Mets’ bullpen, bringing in Reed Garrett to pitch the seventh for the Mets. Garrett tossed a scoreless inning and was followed by two scoreless innings from Justin Hagenman.

In the bottom of the ninth, facing the chance of being no-hit, Juan Soto sent one deep to center field to break up the no-hit bid and keep the Mets from being no-hit and shutout. Williams finished with 8 2/3 innings of one-hit ball on 126 pitches.

But the Mets’ attempt at a comeback came up short as they fell 4-1 to the Guardians and were swept by Cleveland.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
