Mets Place José Buttó on IL, Recall Chris Devenski

The New York Mets’ battered rotation and bullpen continues to get beat down. This time around, the team announced that it’s right-handed pitcher José Buttó who was placed on the 15-day injured list retroactive to July 1 with an illness.

So far this season, Buttó is 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 games. He has thrown 43 2/3 innings and struck out 39 batters. In the month of June, the 27-year-old gave up no earned runs and just six hits across 13 2/3 frames.

Manager Carlos Mendoza did not disclose the nature of Buttó’s illness as a means of protecting his privacy, though he’s not believed to be dealing with a long-term condition and the club expects him to return shortly after the All-Star break.

In response to Butto hitting the IL, the Mets have recalled right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski from Triple-A Syracuse.

Devenski has appeared in four games at the big league level this season for New York. He has a 3.60 ERA and five strikeouts in those outings.

Devenski struggled in his Mets debut in April, giving up two runs to the Arizona Diamondbacks on April 30, but he hasn’t allowed a run in his three subsequent appearances.

With Butto going on the IL, the Mets will lean on Devenski and hope he can help a depleted Mets bullpen finish games out strong for the immediate future.

The Mets now have 15 players on the IL, 12 of whom are pitchers (six starters, six relievers).
