Sean Manaea

On Friday, Sean Manaea made a rehab assignment with Triple-A Syracuse against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. He was dominant in his outing, going 5 1/3 innings, giving up just one earned run on two hits, and striking out seven. He threw 62 pitches (45 for strikes) and retired the last 15 batters he faced.

However, during their press conferences, Mendoza and Stearns noted that Manaea complained about his left elbow.

“He got an MRI yesterday (Monday) and showed a loose body there,” said Mendoza. With that he received a cortisone shot Monday as well and was shut down from throwing for 48-72 hours. The Mets will attempt to get him going again after that.

“This sets us back a couple days, but at least right now we don’t anticipate this necessarily resetting anything,” said Stearns.

He also said “it is yet to be determined” if Manaea will need offseason surgery to remove the loose bodies from the elbow, but the goal is that the Cortisone injection will reduce the inflammation and keep him from feeling the loose bodies when he pitches, and he should be fine for the remainder of the season.

Jesse Winker

Winker has been returning to full New York baseball workouts over the last several weeks. Mendoza noted that he will continue his full workouts in New York through the remainder of the week, and the goal is “hopefully he’s DH’ing by the end of the weekend in a minor league rehab assignment.”

When Winker commences his rehab work, it is likely to be a long-term assignment. They will monitor Winker closely and see how he does day by day.
