A three game series in San Diego feels wrong

It’s been a tough week for the Mariners, as they are now on the road following a 1-5 homestand. And it doesn’t get any easier as they start this ten game road trip. The first stop is San Diego where they’ll take on the Padres in the first-ever official “Vedder Cup.” With MLB starting its new Rivalry Weekend tradition, the annual matchup’s name is now official.

Lineups:

Seattle Mariners

Logan Evans will get the start for today’s matchup, as the team chose to reshuffle the rotation instead of starting Jhonathan Díaz. It will be Evans’ 4th career start, on the heels of his 5 inning no-decision against Toronto on the 10th.

Offensively, the team has slipped in the rankings since their peak in early May, but hopefully will still be able to find a win today. It’s always a tough ask to have your “get right” series on the road, but perhaps the spirit of Eddie Vedder will compel them to victory.

San Diego Padres

To try to take the first game of this Rivalry Weekend, the Padres are sending Stephen Kolek up on the mound. The 11th round 2018 draft pick will be making his 3rd start of the year, so both teams are sending out arms that haven’t seen very much major league action in 2025. Kolek made his MLB debut last year, splitting duties as a starter and reliever. He was shelled pretty hard, sporting a 5.21 ERA in 46.2 innings pitched. He has yet to give up an earned run in his 14.1 innings of MLB ball in 2025. Perhaps today is the day.

Game Information:

First Pitch: 6:40 pm PT

TV: Apple TV+ with Wayne Randazzo and Dontrelle Willis on the call. Heidi Watney will be the field reporter.

Radio: Seattle Sports 710 AM with Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill Jr.
