Sports Briefs: Redwood grad Veley pitches COM baseball to win

Redwood High grad Charles Veley struck out five batters through eight scoreless innings to pick up the win as College of Marin beat Laney, 8-0, in Kentfield on Tuesday. Veley (3-4) held the Eagles to four hits.

Adrian Ruiz hit a pair of two-run triples to spur the Mariners (14-8-1, 5-0 BVC), who did all their damage in the seventh and eighth innings. Caden Sta Maria had a pair of hits, including a double, and Logan Fiene  also had two hits.

Boys golf

Low medalist Dylan Siegel shot a 4-over 40 at Presidio Golf Club on Tuesday to lead Marin Academy to a 184-223 win over BCL West rival Drew. The Wildcats (4-0, 3-0 BCL) got solid outings from Charlie Wilhelm (45) and Drayson Jaffee (47).

Boys lacrosse

Marin Catholic went over the hill for a 12-6 non-league victory over neighboring rival Marin Academy on Tuesday. Marin Catholic (7-1) is scheduled to open the Catholic Cup tournament against De La Salle (5-1) at St. Ignatius on Thursday. Marin Academy (4-4) is slated to host Stevenson (2-0) in a non-league matchup on Thursday.

  • Terra Linda (2-4, 0-1 MCAL) is set to dive back into league play on Thursday against Novato after Tuesday’s 10-4 home loss to Berkeley. Novato (3-3, 3-0 MCAL)  is coming off a 10-7 loss to host Rancho Cotate on Tuesday.

Girls lacrosse

Redwood (5-2, 3-1 MCAL), coming off Tuesday’s 12-4 loss to host Sacred Heart Prep, is scheduled to open league play on Thursday against Branson in Ross.

Motor sports

Petaluma’s Tyler O’Hara will host and organize a MotoAmerica Mission Mini Cup Qualifier at Sonoma Raceway on July 19-20, as an opportunity for young riders to compete on a national stage — even if they don’t own a motorcycle.

The winners of this qualifier will earn a spot in the Mission Mini Cup National Final, taking place August 8-10 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The event will also feature a Hawk Mazzotta Moto Camp, where riders of all skill levels can receive expert training from top racers, including former MotoGP star John Hopkins.
