Mariners 2025 Spring Training Game #17 (3/8): Open Game Thread

Also some roster cuts as spring training hits the halfway mark

After getting beat up at the hands of the Dodgers last night under the lights, the Mariners must regroup swiftly for a daytime game against the Cubs at Sloan Park. The rotation resets for the third time, with Logan Gilbert getting the start. Because it’s a Cubs home game, this one is getting picked up nationally, so you’ll be able to watch it on television if you have access to MLB Network.

Today’s infield features several new or new-ish faces: Jorge Polanco sees his first action in the field, over at third base, and Cole Young, who’s been slowed by a sore arm, will handle second. Leo Rivas, who has also been dealing with injury, makes his spring debut.

Scheduled to pitch behind Logan: Seth Martinez, Tayler Saucedo, Trent Thornton, and Brandyn Garcia. This will be our first look at Martinez, the former Astro, who was claimed off waivers and added to the 40-man last week.

Oh yeah, Kyle Tucker is a Cub now. A moment of appreciation for the desert color scheme of the Cubs’ gameday graphic. I have my complains about the white-on-yellow text (unreadable!), but it’s cool to see a team so drastically depart from their hallowed Branding and lean into the desert milieu; it’s like a reminder that spring training is its own separate thing, and also it’s a fun way to incorporate colors other than red and blue. Now someone do desert sunset as a color scheme!

The Mariners announced some more roster cuts today, sending a group of 2025 Tacoma Rainiers over to minor-league camp: OFs Cade Marlowe, Rhylan Thomas, Spencer Packard, and INF Brock Rodden have been reassigned.
