Christian Scott Shut Down for Two Weeks

Updated Post – July 24 at 18:45

The Mets received potential long-term good news as rookie pitcher Christian Scott will not need surgery right now on his elbow.

Scott will be shut down with a UCL sprain for two weeks before he resumes baseball activity.

Manager Carlos Mendoza said the Mets feel good about the possibility of Scott returning this season.

In other injury news, Sean Reid-Foley (shoulder impingement) will not start his rehab assignment on Thursday as originally planned. Instead, SRF will throw a bullpen on Thursday and hope to start his rehab assignment over the weekend.

As the New York Mets prepare to play the New York Yankees in the latest chapter of the Subway Series and await Kodai Senga‘s return, they lost a young starter to the injured list. Rookie Christian Scott, who started nine games for the Mets in 2024, was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a UCL sprain (a growing epidemic).

In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled left-hander Alex Young from Triple-A Syracuse

It’s a setback in what has become a roller-coaster rookie campaign for Scott. Scott started his year off strong. He had a 3.90 ERA through his first five starts with 25 strikeouts in 27 2/3 innings pitched.

Opponents slashed .233/.279/.369 against him in those five starts. Scott ran into some hard luck thanks to the Mets struggling on offense and in the bullpen. Due to this, he wasn’t able to get a win. Then, while pitching well, the Mets sent him back down to Triple-A to limit his innings.

New York brought him back into the fold earlier in July, and things just haven’t been the same for him. Scott has an ERA of 5.49 in five starts since returning with only 14 strikeouts. Opposing offenses are slashing .273/.333/.52o. Overall, Scott is 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA this season.

Young was claimed off waivers by the Mets last week. He last pitched in the majors for the Cincinnati Reds this season before he was traded to the San Francisco Giants. The Giants sent him to their Triple-A affiliate and later placed him on waivers.

Reed Garrett Update

On the bright side, the team received good news about Reed Garrett. Per Mike Puma of The New York Post, Garrett has resumed throwing. The hope is he will throw off the mound this weekend. Garrett was 7-3 with a 3.64 ERA in 36 games for the Mets before being placed on the injured list. Garrett is recovering from right elbow inflammation.

Sean Reid-Foley Update

Carlos Mendoza noted that Sean Reid-Foley, who’s been out with a right shoulder impingement since late June, will start a rehab assignment Thursday with Brooklyn. Sorely missed, Reid-Foley has posted a 1.66 ERA in 23 games this season.
