Mariners Game #85 Preview: 6/29/2024

MLB: Seattle Mariners at Cleveland Guardians

looking to take two from the twins

After last night’s win against the Twins, the Mariners look to win tonight and secure their 10th consecutive series win at home. That would put them just one shy of the team record, set back across 2001 and 2002. They’ll be doing so in front of a sellout crowd, drawn in by both the competitive match up and the aloha shirt giveaway.

Lineups:

It’s Bryce Miller night for all who celebrate. It’s his 17th start of the year and the first of his career against the Minnesota Twins. He’s looking to bounce back after a rough start against Miami his last time out where he gave up 6 runs in 4 innings. He’s given up 2 or fewer runs in 10 of his games this year, and sports the 5th lowest opposing BA in the AL, so hopefully tonight will be a return to form.

On the other side, the Twins are trotting out Pablo López. The right hander’s year hasn’t been going to plan so far, but there’s a chance he can turn it around. There’s a pretty huge disparity between his ERA (5.11) and his xERA (3.27), and he’s still striking out over a quarter of the batters he faces. Hopefully tonight’s packed crowd will rattle him and he won’t be able to lock in.

Game Information:

First pitch: 7:10 PT

Today in Mariners History:

  • 1987 - Jerry Reed made his first Major League start after appearing in 84 career games, all in relief.
  • 1995 - Mike Blowers hit a three-run HR in the bottom of the eighth to give the Mariners a come-from-behind 5-2 win vs. Oakland. Pinch-hitter Doug Strange tied the game with a single just before Blowers game-winner.
  • 2018 – Marco Gonzales recorded his first career complete game in a 4-1 win over the Royals… was the second Mariner to throw a complete game this year (also: James Paxton)… marked the first time that two Mariners starters have recorded a complete game in the same season since 2016.
  • 2021 - Hector Santiago was suspended following his ejection on 6/28 after umpires found a sticky substance on his glove, Santiago appealed the suspension.
