Tylor Megill Turns In Another Scoreless Start For Syracuse

0 5

Starting pitcher Tylor Megill is still working back from a right shoulder strain. He made his fourth rehab start on Sunday, turning in another scoreless outing. Megill tossed 5 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits. He did not allow a run or walk a batter while posting six strikeouts. Megill threw 74 pitches, 55 of which were strikes.

In all, Megill has thrown 14 innings since beginning his rehab assignment across three different levels in the system. He has only allowed one run, via a solo home run, as well as nine hits to go along with 23 strikeouts. The most encouraging sign is the fact he has only walked one batter. Overall, elevated strikeout rate and low walk rate, a good recipe for success.

Megill is clearly nearing a return to an all of a sudden jammed pack group of starting pitching options. Top prospect Christian Scott has emerged through two starts, while David Peterson and Kodai Senga are also working on getting back into the lineup. That is four pitchers and only one spot in the rotation.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Mets approach the logjam. Megill’s major-league sample size has largely been rocky, posting xERAs of 3.84, 4.31, 5.85, and 4.39 over the last four seasons, respectively. It is likely he gets another shot, but with all the competition, could fall out of favor pretty quickly.

Another potential option, which would help Megill, is if the Mets chose to go with a six-man rotation when he returns. Which, given the rookie pitcher, and a few other starters who are returning from injury, would make a lot of sense.
