Elephant Rumblings: A’s split four game series at Yankee Stadium

The A’s closed out a tough series in the harsh environs of Yankee Stadium yesterday with a 3-1 win to secure a 2-2 series split against one of the American League’s hottest teams. Oakland is still playing sub-.400 ball this season, but silver lining: they’re three games ahead of the Astros in the AL West.
Second baseman Zack Gelof was widely regarded as the A’s best player coming into the 2024 season, but after a slow start at the plate, he’s landed on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain. Hopefully he’ll recover fully and reboot his swing for the better. AN’s own Kris Willis has details on Gelof’s injury as well as the callup of top prospect Darell Hernaiz, who made his presence felt immediately in contributing to yesterday’s win.
Jim Bowden at The Athletic put together a list of the 10 biggest disappointments of this nascent 2024 season. The A’s announced move to Sacramento next year was number five on the list—that’s four slots too low, Jim. The Athletic also polled 40 executives on the top 10 front offices in MLB. The A’s FO received nary a vote. Fair enough.

I was heartened to see Erceg defending in the seventh yesterday.
Mason Miller's dominance is kind of overshadowing how nasty Lucas Erceg is looking these days. Struck out Judge with a 100 mph bowling ball sinker and then gets Giancarlo Stanton to chase a 99 mph fastball up in the zone for strike three to end the seventh.
