[Men's Basketball] SDCC Gives #4 ACU A Scare, Fall 63-69

EL CAJON, Calif. – After a disappointing GSAC opener, the San Diego Christian men's basketball team came out firing on all cylinders on Saturday and gave the #4 ranked Arizona Christian Firestorm a scare. Although the Hawks eventually lost the match by a score of 63-69, the team came together and rebounded nicely from the previous game.

The Hawks shot out like a rocket after senior wing, Kavonte Kinney threw down a big dunk immediately following the opening tip-off. It continued to look like it would be San Diego Christian's night as they repeatedly forced ACU to take less than optimum shots. The Hawks would take advantage of the Firestorm's disorganization and capitalize on many of ACU's miscues.

In addition to Kinney, senior Jamario Harris and junior Cameron Dashiell kept scoring, while also upsetting Arizona Christian's rhythm. After leading by as many as 10 points, San Diego Christian would carry a 30-27 lead into the half.

The second half started much as the first and after nearly four minutes, the Hawks held on to a 5-point lead. ACU slowly began to chip away and with about a minute left in the game, held an 11-point advantage. Undaunted, Coach Cosby's men made a last-minute charge to reel ACU back in and give them one final scare. Unfortunately, the clock was not SDCC's friend and the game ended before they could complete the comeback.

All night long, SDCC's tough defense was able to stifle the Firestorm's leading scorer, holding him to four total points. The Hawks also only allowed one ACU player to log double digits (12). SDCC's Kavonte Kinney led all scorers with 18 points.

The much-improved performance gives San Diego Christian a ton of momentum moving forward.
