Acquiring the Cleveland Indians 2020 Franchise [The Continuing Saga of Jerry Dybzinski; 44 years and counting]
Greetings all. Usually I post this in September of the ongoing season. But as all are aware, 2020 was a most unusual year. I did not track the transactions lists like I normally do, so this was a bit different trying to do it after the fact, especially with the Alternate Site and no minor league season to dive into.
So this year’s post is essentially the major league squad, with the Alternate Site (to the best of my ability to determine), along with invites to the Instructional League which involves the highest level prospects and draft picks. The 2021 post will return to the more traditional review of all of the teams in the organization.
For the newly acquainted to this article at the new (and improved(?)) Covering the Corner, this is my annual deep dive into the transaction chains. I believe my first post of this nature was back in 2008. This post only covers transactions from the end of the 2019 season through September 27, 2020. So it will not cover any releases or trades that occurred after the 2020 season. Those will instead be included in this year’s 2021 post, hopefully to be posted again in September.
As predicted in 2019, Corey Kluber did get traded and did extend the longest Cleveland chain to now ten players (but involving a slew more). And with David Wright’s Mets contract finally expiring after the 2020 season, this is now the longest active chain in MLB. However, Wright’s chain did last a staggering 53 years (starting with Jon Matlack being drafted in 1967). So now Emmanual Clase will need to stick with the Cleveland franchise through 2030 in order to tie that length (or be traded for someone else to extend the chain again).
With the continued turnover of the roster, Cleveland has picked up quite a few more players with extended chains. All six players received in the Mike Clevinger deal now start at the Third link and likely at least one of them will get traded again to continue that chain.
Four of the oldest tenured Cleveland players did depart: Jason Kipnis, Danny Salazar, Eric Haase and Cody Anderson. That leaves just one player with over ten years in the system, Roberto Perez.
Notes: Also, when I have identified a free agent year, it is the year they signed for (i.e. December of 2018 would be 2019 season). Additionally, whenever I could not find confirmation of an amateur free agent signing, the year defaults to their first appearance. [aFA = amateur free agent; mFA = minor league free agent; international amateur free agent signing]
