[Softball] Lady Evangels Sweep Langston

4.15.10 - Oklahoma City, Okla.-The Mid-America Christian University softball team picked up a couple of non-conference wins over Langston University in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Jack Allen Field. The Lady Evangels won the opener 13-5 in six innings before shutting out the Lady Lions in the nightcap 8-0 in five inning.

Freshman Tori Covarrubia hit her second home run of the year in game two. It was a two-run walk off in the bottom of the fifth to complete the 8-0 run-rule.

MACU put their first run on the board in the second frame with the help of two Langston errors. Caitlyn Ulmer scored on misplayed grounder by the first baseman after leading off the inning and reaching on a dropped fly ball that she hit to deep center field.

MACU extended their lead in the third with three more runs. Senior Kelsey Gabriel got things started with a single to left-center field and then stole second base. A RBI single by Chelsea Downs plated Gabriel. Ulmer and Candice Meza both hit RBI singles to give MACU the 4-0 advantage.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Lady Evangels ended the game in the fifth, plating four runs. Gabriel led off the inning with a single and stole second. Newman singled to put runners on the corners. A pass ball put both runners in scoring position. Downs grounded bringing Gabriel home. Meza singled to score Newman and Covarrubias ended the game with her two-run bomb.

Caitlyn Ulmer got the win in the circle for the Lady Evangels. The senior right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game shutout allowing three hits while striking out five.

Jill Wilbanks got the win in game one pitching five innings. She allowed five runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Downs closed out the game pitching one inning allowing no hits with one strikeout.

After posting one run in the first the Lady Evangels had a productive third inning adding eight runs on seven hits with the help of two errors. Freshman Tiffanie Sanchez led off the inning with a single. Gabriel followed with a single and Newman doubled to send Sanchez home. Downs grounded out to score Gabriel and Meza singled to score Newman. Covarrubia hit an RBI double and Harley Harp followed with a two-RBI double. Sanchez came back to the plate and scored the last run of the inning rounding the bases on two-errors.

After the Lady Evangels added their tenth run in the fourth the Lady Lions rallied to score five runs.

The Lady Evangels scored three runs in the sixth to complete the run-rule.

Freshman Ashley Newman was 3-3 at the plate in game one with one RBI and one run scored. On the day she went 4-6 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Candice Meza led the team at the plate going 4-6 on the day with four RBI's and two runs scored.

Gabriel had four stolen bases on the day and went 4-7 at the plate.

The Lady Evangels (17-21) resume Sooner Athletic Conference action on Saturday, April 17th as the host No. 3 Lubbock Christian University in a doubleheader starting a 1 p.m.
