Verstappen and Tsunoda's Belgian GP grid penalties confirmed
Red Bull and sister outfit RB have confirmed the introduction of new power unit elements for Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda for this weekend's Belgian GP and their respective grid penalties.
Verstappen dominated Friday’s opening practice which bodes well for the Dutchman’s chances of claiming pole on Saturday.
However, a best-case scenario will see the championship leader line up eleventh on the grid if he secures pole position given his 10-place sanction for taking on a fifth internal combustion engine, a strategic decision by Red Bull.
Verstappen is at risk of another grid drop later in the season as he is now on to his final authorized turbocharger, battery, control electronics and MGU-H and MGU-K.
Despite the setback, Verstappen remains optimistic about his chances of recovering through the field at Spa-Francorchamps, a track renowned for its overtaking opportunities.
Verstappen has previously showcased his ability to overcome grid penalties at the circuit, having won from 14th and sixth on the grid in recent years.
However, the challenge will be greater this time around with McLaren demonstrating strong pace and securing a one-two finish at the previous race in Hungary.
Tsunoda has incurred an even harsher penalty. The Japanese driver will launch his race from the back of the grid after Honda added an entire new power unit to his pool of hardware.
Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and Williams’ Alex Albon have also received new power units for this weekend’s event, but their respective quota remain within the penalty-free limits.
