Lifter Pun betters own mark as 47 national records tumble

Tara Devi Pun bettered her national record on her way to winning gold medal in the third Sunil Lal Joshi National Weightlifting Championship here today.

The Nepal Police Club lifter, who has been at the top for more 18 years in all national tournaments, improved her clean and jerk record by one kilogramme to win the women’s 76kg weight category gold medal with the total lift of 170kg. Pun, who is in the national team camp for the upcoming 13th South Asian Games, lifted 72kg in snatch and 98kg in clean and jerk.

Jayanti Shrestha of Nepal APF Club came second with total lift of 115kg including 55kg in snatch and 60kg in clean and jerk, while Kalpana Chaudhary of Dang was third with the lift of 90kg.

TAC’s Asmita Rai set three records in above-87kg category. She lifted 58kg in snatch and 70kg in clean and jerk for total of 128kg. She held the records of 53kg, 68kg and 121kg in three sections. Sudha Thapa of NPC came second with 120kg that included 53kg and 67kg in snatch and C&J respectively. Manita Chaudhary of Siraha was third with 102kg.

NPC lifter Laxmi Ban won 81kg weight category gold and set three new records. She lifted 65kg in snatch and 86kg in C&J for the total of 148kg. She broke her own marks of 64kg, 82kg and 146kg. Man Kumari Kumal of TAC came second with 123kg that included 58kg in snatch and 65kg in C&J.

Pun was declared the Strongest Woman of the competition, while Pukar Gurung of TAC won the Strongest Man award. They earned Rs 11,000 each. Bikash Thapa of NPC was named the best lifter in men’s section.

NPC lifters Sangita Rai and Sanju Chaudhary — who broke three each national record to win gold medals in their respective weight categories — were named the best lifters in senior and junior sections respectively. While 23 national records were shattered in women’s section, a total of 24 new marks were set in men’s category.

In men’s section, Prakash KC of NPC won the 67kg weight category gold medal with three national records. KC improved his own records in snatch and clean and jerk by three kilogrammes to set the new total. He lifted 106kg in snatch and 125kg in clean and jerk for the total of 231kg. Niraj Gupta of Birgunj United was a distant second with 160kg.

In junior section, Jeevan Tamang of TAC won gold medal with 191kg including 83kg in snatch and 108kg in clean and jerk, while his teammate Santosh Thapaliya was second with 190kg after he fell one kilogramme behind in clean and jerk. Dhana Bahadur Jarki Magar of Kaski came third with 183kg including 85kg in snatch and 98kg in clean and jerk.

Raju Chaudhary of TAC also set three national records in 61kg weight category. He lifted 94kg in snatch to break Mui Lama’s record of 92kg to add to his clean and jerk score of 120kg for the total of 200. Chaudhary held the records of 110kg in clean and jerk and 200kg in total. Mui Lama of NPC came second with 187kg that included 87kg and 100kg in clean and jerk. Arun Kumar Rajbanshi of Morang was third with 155kg. Tushar Buda Magar of Banke won junior section gold with total lift of 172kg including 76kg in snatch and 96kg in clean and jerk.

Tularam Mahato of TAC set two national records on his way to winning 55kg section gold medal. Mahato lifted 90kg in snatch breaking the previous mark of 80kg held by Tula Ram and got 95kg in clean and jerk for the total of 185kg, five more than the national mark of Tula Ram. Lal Babu Paswan of Saptari won junior section gold with a total lift of 157kg.

Bikash Thapa of NPC set three national records in 81kg section with the total lift of 256kg that included 120kg in snatch and 136kg in clean and jerk. The 12th South Asian Games silver medallist Thapa held the records of 115kg, 135kg and 250kg in three sections. Mahesh Chaudhary of APF came second with 235kg, while his teammate Santosh Chaudhary was third with 211. Suraj Baisya of Banke won junior section gold medal with the total lift of 181kg.

Dinesh Karki of TAC won 89kg gold with two national records in C&J and total. Karki lifted 105kg in snatch and 135kg in C&J for the total lift of 240kg. Karki held the records of 132 and 230kg. Om Prakash Baisa of NPC came second with 105kg in snatch and 130kg in C&J for the total of 235kg, while APF’s Tilak Bahadur Thapa was third with 215kg. Asmini Snai of Banke won junior section gold with 211kg.
TAC’s Yagya Bahadur Saru won 73kg weight category gold medal with the total lift of 225kg including 98kg in snatch and 127kg in C&J. Sajaruah Alam of Birgunj United won junior section gold with the total lift of 162kg.

In all, 120 players took part in the two-day championship that featured 20 weight categories — 10 each in men and women sections. Nepal Weightlifting Association organised the event in memory of Olympian lifter Sunil Lal Joshi.
