Wally Clarke RIP
Swim Ireland and the Irish aquatic community is saddened by the passing of 2018 Swim Ireland Hall of Famer Wally Clarke, a lifelong servant to swimming and water polo.
A central figure in Cathal Brugha Swimming and Water Polo Club for over 50 years, Wally also contributed tirelessly at national level. His service began in 1968 as Treasurer of the Irish Water Polo Association, and over the following decades he held roles including Secretary, Water Polo Representative to the Irish Amateur Swimming Association Board, and Treasurer of the organisation during one of its most challenging periods.
Wally was also deeply committed to Masters swimming and served on the Masters Committee from 2004 to 2007. Qualifying as a Swim Ireland Referee in 2007, he remained a familiar and respected presence at national and regional meets. His influence extended internationally, representing Swim Ireland at European and World Aquatics conferences and helping bring the 2003 European Short Course Championships to Dublin.
Beyond governance, Wally was a passionate advocate for inclusive sport, supporting major events such as the Special Olympics, World Down Syndrome Championships, and European Transplant & Dialysis Games. He also donned a red suit on many occasions for the Swim Ireland Christmas Cracker Gala!
A former President of Swim Ireland, Wally’s contribution to aquatic sport is immeasurable. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
