Swim Leinster Celebrates Its Largest Minor Schools Gala Ever

0 3
Swim Leinster recently held the 2026 Minor Schools Gala on Sunday, 18 January at the National Aquatic Centre.
This year’s Gala brought together an incredible 1,012 young swimmers, aged 9, 10, 11 and 12, representing 264 Primary level schools from every corner of Leinster. Across the day, swimmers took part in a remarkable 2,352 individual swims and 148 relay teams, creating a non‑stop programme of vibrant sporting action.
A Historic Milestone for Leinster Swimming.
The 2026 edition proudly stands as:
  • The largest single‑day swimming gala held in Leinster this season, and
  • The largest Minor Schools Gala ever delivered by Swim Leinster.
The energy, atmosphere, and sheer excitement reflected not only the scale of the event but the extraordinary passion for the sport throughout the province.
This year also marked the successful rollout of a new digital platform for managing entries, a strategic decision by the Swim Leinster Management Committee that significantly streamlined administration and helped ensure the smooth delivery of such a large and complex event.
Speaking after the event,  Leinster Region Chairperson, Paul Daly, praised the young athletes and everyone who contributed to the day: “To see over a thousand young swimmers racing with such enthusiasm was truly inspiring. The Minor Schools Gala is a crucial introduction to competitive swimming for so many children, and this year’s record participation shows just how strong and vibrant our sport is across Leinster. A heartfelt thank‑you to the volunteers, teachers, parents and swimmers who made the day such a huge success.”
Swim Leinster extends a huge thank‑you to the core Swim Leinster Volunteer Competitions Day Team, whose skill and commitment were central to delivering an event of this scale. Sincere appreciation also goes to the 80+ volunteer officials, parents and team coaches who undertook timekeeping and turn judge duties – their generosity and professionalism ensured a smooth, fair, and safe experience for all swimmers.
The phenomenal appetite and participation witnessed at this year’s Gala highlights the strength, growth, and potential of swimming across Leinster. The Minor Schools is just a first step on a lifetime relationship with the water.
It also underscores the urgent need for additional aquatic facilities across the province, echoing concerns raised in Swim Ireland’s recent facilities publication. Modern, accessible pool infrastructure will be crucial to support the thousands of young athletes, schools and clubs who rely on these spaces to train, compete, and develop.
Swim Leinster looks forward to continuing its work with schools, clubs, volunteers, and families to nurture participation at every level, support young talent, and build an even stronger future for swimming across the province.
