Women’s 2025 Super Cup quotes, facts and figures
CN Sant Andreu’s Super Cup win – coupled with Sabadell’s five previous victories – lifts Spain to the top of the all-time ranks with six triumphs in total. The 2025 final against ZV De Zaan set a new scoring record in the Super Cup with 27 hits in total. More facts and figures, plus post-game quotes follow.
Champions League winners are now 14-5 up against the Euro Cup (before: LEN Trophy) victors in the women’s Super Cup finals. It was a historical first win for Sant Andreu, as they followed up their stunning first-ever Champions League title earlier this year.
The Spanish are now topping the all-time ranks by nation – before this final, Spain, Greece and Italy were tied with five triumphs each. Sant Andreu’s victory is the sixth title for the Spaniards (beforehand, Sabadell delivered all their five Super Cups).
The 2025 final was as lopsided as many of the previous ones. Sant Andreu won 17-10, which is the third largest gap in the history of the Super Cup finals.
Sabadell set a new record a year ago when they thrashed Padova 19-7. Orizzonte beat fellow Italian side Roma 16-8 in 2008, and Vouliagmeni also upended Ethnikos 13-5 in an all-Greek final in 2010. Ethnikos also suffered a seven-goal defeat, again dished out by a fellow Greek club, Olympiacos, 11-4 in 2022.
Sant Andreu’s 17 goals is the second highest score after Sabadell’s 19 last year, eclipsing Orizzonte’s 16 hits from 2008. The total number of goals scored, 27, is a new record in regular time in the history of the Super Cup finals. The final score from 2018, 15-13 to Dunaujvaros over Kirishi, includes the converted penalties in the shootout.
Interestingly, two more matches await the two sides in this season as they were drawn in the same group in the Champions League Women (Group D). In less than a month, the Dutch may go for a better result in their home in the second round of the Group Stage.
Quotes from the game
Javier Aznar Fernandez, coach, CN Sant Andreu
“We knew we were facing a very good team, who could play a very intense game, so we had to be ready. Earlier, we lost the Catalonian Cup final and the Spanish Super Cup final, so I needed to talk to the girls, so that they could believe they were able to win big matches, finals. And they just proved that. I think we did really well today, we started well and could maintain a good level until the end.”
Mick van den Bree, coach, ZV De Zaan
“At the beginning, we made too many big mistakes and Sant Andreu could take a big lead. Then for three periods we played decent water polo, and to play decent water polo against this team, it’s a really big achievement for us. Of course, it’s still a loss, a big loss, and if we want to compete with teams like Sant Andreu, we need to do a lot of work. I told the girls we had to be proud, as this match was a bonus for their win in the Euro Cup last season. We know that the difference is big between the Champions League winners and the Euro Cup winners, but all in all, we showed some really good moments today.”
Elena Ruiz, player, CN Sant Andreu
“Though I have won every major title in my career, even the Olympic gold last year, I’m just like all the other girls, hungry for more success. Despite a couple of changes to the team, the players are really close to each others and we are ready to fight in every game. Today we played really well, we won the Super Cup, but there is no time to celebrate, we have to focus on our next game.”
