Singapore 2025: Fourth world gold for Wellbrock as Germany win concluding open water swimming 4x1500m relay
Florian Wellbrock earned his fourth open water swimming gold at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore as he anchored Germany to victory in the mixed 4x1500m relay.
Having failed to reach the podium in this event at the last two World Championships, the Germans regained the title they won in 2022 with a formidable quartet that also comprised Paris 2024 silver medallist Oliver Klemet, European 1500m silver medallist Celine Rieder and Isabel Gose, who won world short course gold and long course bronze at 1500m last year.
In what was the concluding open water swimming event at these Championships, Wellbrock was pushed on the final leg by Italy’s Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Gregorio Paltrinieri, finishing 02.10sec clear.
It was the third silver of these Championships for Paltrinieri, who was partnered by Barbara Pozzobon, Marcello Guidi and Paris 2024 bronze medallist Ginevra Taddeucci, who thus collected her fourth silver in Singapore.
Hungary – comprising Paris 2024 bronze medallist David Betlehem, Olympic champion Kristof Rasovszky, Bettina Fabian and Viktoria Mihalyvari-Farkas – moved past France on the last lap to claim bronze.
“Yesterday I couldn’t sleep really well,” Wellbrock told World Aquatics. “I was also nervous heading into the relay today. I’m so proud of my team, we did a great job today. Four golds in four events is amazing.
“I was so scared at the end. I took a look and realised that it’s Greg behind me – no time for jokes any more.”
