Making waves for a greener future: European Aquatics and Vaterpolo Klub Ljubljana Slovan implementing sustainable initiatives at U16 European Water Polo Championships

0 5

In close collaboration with Vaterpolo Klub Ljubljana Slovan, European Aquatics is delighted to announce the implementation of a comprehensive Sustainability and Legacy Programme, which is currently underway at the Division One U16 Men’s European Water Polo Championships in Slovenia this week.

The prestigious event is being hosted in the historic capital city of Ljubljana, with the competition taking place from 7 to 13 July, and the initiatives demonstrate a firm commitment to creating a positive environmental and social impact alongside the pursuit of sporting excellence.

Building on recent successes across the continent, the programme aims to minimise the tournament’s carbon footprint while generating enduring social and economic benefits for both the local and wider Ljubljana region.

These plans are a core principle of the broader Aquatics Social Responsibility (ASR) Strategy and forms part of European Aquatics’ long-term sustainability goals.

‘In alignment with the European Aquatics strategy, the European Aquatics Social Responsibility principles, and the recommendations outlined in the European Aquatics Sustainable Chart, we are committed to implementing ambitious and measurable actions in all our activities and events.’ stated Igor Surlan, president of Vaterpolo Klub Ljubljana Slovan.

The programme for this week’s events is structured around five core priority areas, each carefully aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

A dedicated Green Task Force, made up of local volunteers, will be present throughout the Championships to engage with attendees, raise awareness of critical environmental issues, and promote the adoption of sustainable practices among all participants and spectators.

All the games are being played at the impressive, state-of-the-art lirija swimming pool complex, which has been built according to the highest environmental standards. A solar power plant on the roof also provides nearly all the electricity needed from renewable sources. Plus, the facility uses geothermal energy for heating and cooling.

Reusable bidons have been provided to all participating teams as well, which replaces the need for bottled water, and high quality tap water is available all across the venue.

In addition, admission to the Division One games is entirely free of charge for under-15s and senior citizens over-65. This measure is intended to promote inclusivity, strengthen community ties, and inspire broader public engagement with the sport of water polo.

‘We are aware that achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals requires significant and transformative actions to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030,’ added Mr Surlan.

‘Our organisation also acknowledges that maintaining a clean environment and conserving water are crucial for ensuring a healthy and sustainable world, which is essential for the well-being of athletes and society.’

Additional initiatives already in operation in Ljubljana include a dedicated ‘Sustainable Fun Zone’ – a fun and interactive space designed to highlight and demonstrate the various sustainability measures being implemented at the event.

Within this area, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of cycling, effective waste separation, and the importance of using reusable water bottles.

These efforts reflect the shared commitment of European Aquatics and Vaterpolo Klub Ljubljana Slovan to delivering aquatic events that generate positive outcomes for the sport, society, and the environment alike.

Collectively, these measures aim to leave a lasting impact on the local community and all participants, establishing a meaningful and enduring legacy that will extend well beyond the conclusion of the Championships.
